Welcome to the CAMIL wiki! If you need help, contact the assistant administrator.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: With the assistance of Technology Services at FAA, all workstations in both labs are now configured for login via Active Directory credentials. All users should use their NetID and Active Directory (UIUC e-mail, usually) credentials to login. OSX "Guest Accounts" are no longer in use in CAMIL. All users must have a University of Illinois NetID in order to login to the machines. If you do not have a NetID, information about obtaining a short or long-term Guest NetID is here.

When you login, a local account is created for you (if it does not already exist) on that specific workstation. All user account data from all CAMIL workstations is backed up nightly, but you are also encouraged to keep your own additional copies of any important files.

CAMIL (Computer Assisted Music Instruction Laboratory) is located at the School of Music at the University of Illinois. It consists of two independent, multi-disciplinary computer labs. CAMIL I is a special-purpose lab supporting computer music classes and independent research projects in software sound synthesis, computer-based composition and interactive performance control. It is open during all Music Building hours, but requires a key for access. CAMIL II is a general-purpose lab supporting technology-related classes. It is open to all Illinois students, faculty and staff on a walk-in basis during scheduled open hours.

Faculty and students may request a CAMIL I key, or may schedule use of either CAMIL lab for a lecture, class or special event by contacting the assistant administrator.

  • Recording — CAMIL I has recording equipment available for checkout. An 8-channel phantom-powered audio interface is built-in to the rack, with a breakout box that allows easy multichannel access to the center of the room. See the Recording page for more information.
  • Computers — As of August 2016, there are 35 client iMacs. All machines in CAMIL I are running OSX 10.11 El Capitan, and those in CAMIL II are running OSX 10.10 Yosemite.
  • Audio Renovation — As of August 2012, a complete audio overhaul was done in CAMIL I aimed at increasing access and quality of audio in the room. All audio is now digital and is mixed without the use of a patching console. As of January 2016, audio from all workstations in both labs is routed to the room speakers via software using a Dante network.
  • Networking — As of Fall 2015, 1GB ethernet is available at all lab workstations. Wireless internet service is also available in both labs.
  • Web and File Servers — As of November 2015, the web and file server have been separated in order to improve security. The web server remains at The new file server runs on OSX 10.10.5 Yosemite, and provides file storage for about 200 CAMIL users. User data is stored in a 4TB RAID 1 array. The new file server may be accessed via AFP/SMB from an on-campus IP or using the UIUC VPN.
  • Backup — Incremental backup of CAMIL accounts on the new file server, and of local accounts on the clients, occurs nightly.
  • Access — CAMIL I and II have specially designed acoustic doors. The door to CAMIL I is locked at all times, and access is only possible using a room key. The door to CAMIL II is unlocked during classes and scheduled open hours, and locked otherwise.
